Himalayan nomadic tribes do not have access to India’s preventive vaccination drives

The tiny Himalayan nomadic tribe called the ‘Van Ravats’, found in a few districts of India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, have not heard about vaccines or the benefits of vaccination. A lack of education, as well as neglect by the state’s health officials, means most of their children are malnourished and ill. Extreme poverty means these people are more focused on getting two square meals a day rather than having any interest in national level health campaigns. There are practical difficulties as well, with the nearest health centres a good distance away from where they live. The Central Himalayan Environmental Association, which works towards the development of mountain communities, is trying to change this situation, with awareness and education campaigns.
