Uttar Pradesh to get free pneumococcal conjugate vaccines to tackle pneumonia

Pneumonia kills three out of every five children under the age of five in Uttar Pradesh state, making the state top the charts of pneumonia deaths in the country. In order to halt the march of this potentially fatal lung disease, India’s health ministry has included six high-risk districts in the state for a phased roll-out of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, which was recently included in the central government’s Universal Immunisation Programme.
