First smile; then ask about wellbeing, and only then broach the topic of immunisation. This is the advice that was given to women health workers at a training workshop on ‘Vaccination and Child Health’. Organised by UNICEF and a health sector NGO, the workshop was attended by ‘anganwadi’ (rural mother and child welfare centres), workers, nursing home staff and vaccination workers. The idea is that once this disarming ploy is deployed, the parents or other family members will be more receptive to the idea of vaccinating their children in order to safeguard their health, and the demand for vaccination from rural areas especially will go up.
